Doctors Overwhelmingly Disagree with Government Takeover

Sermo.com, an online community for physicians, surveyed 2,566 U.S. Physicians on public options, co-ops and how health care reform might impact care they provide their patients. The results? Physicians overwhelmingly disagree with the current reforms on the table.

When asked if either of the alternatives to private insurance being discussed–a public option and a co-op option–address the real sources of spiraling health care costs, 92 percent of the 2,566 physicians said no. These medical professionals are not content to do nothing; 62 percent said that reforming the health insurance industry is critically important to any effort to reform the current health care system.

Seventy-eight percent believe that a public option would negatively impact the quality of care they can provide their patients. Yesterday’s vote against a public option in the Senate committee may be a temporary setback for the President’s plan. Co-ops, however, are a stepping stone to a public option and are being considered as an alternative; this idea also fails to garner physician support. Sixty-eight percent of the physicians surveyed say a co-op plan would have similarly negative results. Additionally, if health care reform “as currently envisioned” is passed, 47 percent of those surveyed said they would stop accepting insurance or Medicare/Medicaid.

For more details, view the complete results of the survey and read the founder of Sermo’s letter on the health care debate, released in August. He has valuable insights on myths of the public option and the dangers of a national co-op plan.

Is it true that the AMA has endorsed the Obama health care program?

If so, it’s difficult to believe or even understand.

I am personall against any government run insurance program and believe ti would be a disaster if passed. The polititians as usual have no clue what is going on.

    Right on Tina.

One also has to wonder who is getting a kickback at the AARP.

From everything I’ve seen of the proposed plans, one group that is almost certain to suffer is the seniors.

I suspect a little Chicago Style politics going on.

    Hang in there Tina.

    Two more thoughts:
What about the long term Quality of Health Care?
In a capitalistic society, the people decide the value of a product or service with their “dollar votes”. You can think of capitalism as economic democracy. The best products get more “votes” and therefore can increase price or sell more products.
In the medical field, the very best doctors typically charge the highest fees. This fact, of course, incentises other doctors to become the “best”. Take away this incentive, i.e. with socialized medicine, and mediocrity pays the same as excellence. Now there’s a proven incentive system!

    Which doctor will I get?
So what, exactly, will decide which doctor you get when the price that a doctor can charge is set by the government?
You got it, … POLITICS will decide.
Are you an active supporter of the correct politicians? No? Then you get the new green doctor, fresh out of medical school, or the one that doesn’t speak English, or ….
As every socialistic society has proven, time and again, some people are “more equal” than others.

  4. Hear hear!
I want insurance companies to pick my doctors for me, not the government and approval for treatments my doctor recommends should be decided by a policy agreement chosen by my employer, NOT the government. Clear black and white business agreements dictating financial limitations, not government rationing!

The Dems say they can’t put the bill online for all to see, they say they don’t know how. Then how will they ever be able to deal with health records online or how to administer our care. The government makes a shambles of everything they touch, they hire people who won’t work and can’t get fired. They kill competition and incentive in people. I’ve waiting in very long lines at any government facility like the post office, DMV and you wait & wait some more to be told you have to go stand in another line. This health care takeover is all about them getting their hands on the money. This administration wants to control every aspect of American life. Obama is One Big A– Mistake America. My prayer is I hope we wake up before it’s too late for us. Everything they are doing is corrupt.

Another tidbit of information that nobody is talking about. Government is cutting the funding to train new doctors. My daughter is a graduate of KU Medical School and they just announced that their funds have been cut in half. Harvard stopped their Primary Care training program, what other schools have lost out? Congress also passed a law that Medical School loans have to be repaid immediately and not deferred like my daughter did, that means doctors in training can’t go on to more advanced training, say goodbye to Cardiologists, Surgeons, Orthopedists, Obstetricians, or any Specialists. They also want to prevent hospitals from expanding, more ways to ration care and create long waits.

  7. Pat Smith says:

Most doctors do not belong to the AMA because they just want the doctors to pay them high membership fees to do nothing but lobby Congress. My Daughter who is a Pulmonologist does not belong nor do any of the doctors she knows. They took part in a survey and 97% of the doctors are against government run care. They know the government will be telling them how and when to practice medicine. They take an oath when they become doctors and many will quit if they are told they can’t do that test, that they know the patient needs. I’m a senior citizen and I don’t belong to AARP and my parents cancelled their membership when they found out what they were doing. We need to stop supporting the lobbying groups and get them out of Congress because they do not have the best interests of the people.

There is very little about reform in any of the bills. We all know that the present system has many problems. But you should not push, thousands of pages of trash through the congress in the wee hours of the night. I always thought that intellegent people could discuss a problem and find a good solution. The mistruth, the last minute additions, the mandate and the penalty imposed on the public, it all stinks. I never saw so many congress people talk so much about something that they know so little about. They should give up and invite some of the doctors and nurses and others that work with patients every day of the year. Forget the stupid deadlines and the selfserving amendments. Do what is right for the country. and oh, how about doing just a little at a time. I’m sick of big bills and unintended consequences, but maybe they are not so unintended.

Universal Health Care System for all is better than Capitalist Health Market for few… It will make us more competitive around the world!

  12. James says:

You are so full of it. You lie so much and do not expose the fact that you are basically a subsidiary of the insurance industry. QUIT LYING about Health Care Reform.

  13. Kevin says:

This whole thing is Bull$hit. I just watched a commercial on tv for “joinpatientsfirst” and it makes me SICK!
The commercial claims how bad the canadian system is and the UK system is and that The United Stated never wants to get that bad!!!?? are you kidding me? According to the world health organization, Canada is rated 30 and the uk is rated 18th while the united stated is rated 37th after costa rica.

This is what somebody on here said. So…basically in a nutshell…the only people who deserve proper health care are the rich. screw the poor, screw the elderly, screw the 95% of the population and leave the system in place that only cares about the wealthy!

Healthcare should be for everybody and not just for the wealthy. Good healthcare should be for everybody and not just for the wealthy!

  14. al says:

I agree with Kevin. I just watched an advertisement for joinpatientsfirst.com and it is completely false. What they are saying is people have to wait up to a year for surgery in canada. That is a complete false. In extreme cases like major back operations a person may have to wait a month. But that same person may have had a bad back for many years and finally decided to see a doctor. If you were in a car accident and needed back surgery it would happen in hours and you wouldn’t be waiting up to a year. This site is just like a great majority on the net, just here for the adds to make money and there is no care of consideration for you , the public. ////By the way Canadian health care in my opinion is the best in the world, and if the americans can have what we have then and only then will they be able to “be” one of the best countries in the world as they think they are now..good luck to them
